Auto pilot or Self driving car is now becoming a hype these days. It should be, because few companies have already proved that this feature in a car in no more just a dream. That being said, implementing this on a regular basis is yet to achieve and when we say achievement, we should also consider how practical it is.
Consider Elon Musk's motor company "Tesla" and its extraordinary venture in developing eco friendly automobile. They started manufacturing with costly electric cars, power storage, electric vehicle powertrain components, battery products etc. and got attention with their first fully electric car Tesla Road star, then came the Model X, consequently Model S and Model 3. While offering automobiles using power was their first concern, gradually they introduced "Auto pilot" option in their current cars.
Heres the fun part, when we hear the word auto pilot/ self driving cars, first thing that can pop up in our head is cars those drive itself, meaning no involvement of our hands/legs whatsoever. However, Tesla takes a more realistic approach in bringing autopilot system in driving experience.
When Autopilot is turned on in a Tesla, the car can drive itself within a lane; Although to move to another lane, driver need to give a single tap on the turn signal and it will shift to next lane. Moreover, driver also needs to put one hand on the steer to confirm the lane shifting after tapping the turn signal.
From this, it is clear that Tesla does not want you to go full idle while driving and i think its a good thinking. Because in my sense, self driving should be built to give a short period of relaxation instead of long to the driver so that accidents due to falling asleep or lack concentration can be avoided. So Human interaction is obvious part of our life and if we maintain so, we can avoid being robots, right?
Just like above, auto steering, auto parking are many examples of Tesla's creative engineering in their latest models. As safety is the primary concern, so Elon musk wants us to interact manually time to time to avoid any sort of collision.
Other than Tesla, there is another company who is making headlines for last couple of days for its inauguration of self driving cars. Its Uber. Uber technologies is smart transportation system and unlike Tesla, they only embed their technology for turning a normal car to a self driven one.
The mechanism here, however, is completely different. Uber has no intention of half auto piloting their cars as Tesla did, rather they have put Lidar on top of the car and some array of sensors and cameras on the side of the car to make it happen. While auto lane shifting is still to take place in Uber car, they certainly want to continue in developing the features for future smooth operation. The intention of Uber, in my opinion, is to establish this self driving project into a real one so that they can commercially dispatch more cars without drivers which definitely be beneficial to them in terms of cost and time reduction. Heres a brief look at Uber self driving car experience below:
A fully functional auto pilot car is therefore not introduced to us yet. Needless to say, what we have got so far from these two companies (not to mention Google cars) is just the beginning of a new era for automobile industry and surely the technology of collaborating electric car with autopilot will draw a lot of attention to other automobile manufacturers to get into this business, at least thats what i am hoping for.
